EXPERT LECTURE SERIES PROGRAM 3/2017: A COLLABORATION ON SUN BEAR CONSERVATION

Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) Peninsular Malaysia organized the third Expert Lecture Series for this year on 7th September 2017 at the Auditorium, headquarters of PERHILITAN with the theme A Collaboration on Sun Bear Conservation. This event was co-organized by PERHILITAN and Felda Global Ventures Berhad (FGV) supported by The National University of Malaysia (UKM) and Malaysia Nature Society (MNS) as well.

The forum was moderated by Mr. Ahmad Azhar bin Mohammed, former head of the National Wildlife Rescue Center (NWRC) and current Director of Pahang State PERHILITAN. The invited speakers were Mr. K. Ilangovan from FGV sharing about the roles of FGV in Sun Bear Conservation in Peninsular Malaysia. The second presentation was covered by both Mr. Che Ku Mohd Zamzuri bin Chik Wan Ab Rahman and Dr. Zubaidah Kamaruddin about the role of NWRC in Human-Sun Bear conflict management in Peninsular Malaysia. Next, Prof. Dr. Shukor Md Nor shared about the research being carried out on Sun Bears in Peninsular Malaysia. The last speaker from MNS, Mr. Balu Perumal shared about The Role of the Community in Handling the Sun Bear Conflict - Case Study of “Sahabat Beruang Madu”. A question and answer session was held at the end of the presentations and received a very good feedback from participants.

A total of 100 participants comprising the department staff, private organizations, institutions of higher education and members of the public attended this program and it was officiated by Mr. Fakhrul Hatta bin Musa, Deputy Director General I of PERHILITAN. The Expert Lecture Series program is a platform for the Department to deliver and share information with the department staff, the public and relevant stakeholders. The last series of this program is scheduled for October this year and is open to all for free.
