The First Expert Lecture Series Program 2017: Saving Endangered Species
Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) Peninsular Malaysia organized the second Expert Lecture Series for this year on 15th June 2017 at the Auditorium, headquarters of PERHILITAN in conjunction with World Environment Day 2017 which falls on 5th June annually.
The session started with a lecture by Dr. Hasber Salim who also a member of Barn Owls and Rat Research Group (BORG). He shared his experience in biological control of rats using barn owl, Tyto alba javanica, and the conservation of the species which has been threatened with the widespread usage of highly toxic chemical rodenticides. The second speaker was Ms. Syarifah Khadiejah Binti Syed Mohd Kamil, Senior Assistant Director in Enforcement Division shared her outcomes from study entitled Assessing Sustainable Trade in Reticulated Python in Peninsular Malaysia collaboration with Python Conservation Partnership (PCP). The last speaker was Prof. Frederick Sheldon from Louisiana State University who shared about his research into the biogeography of Sundaland’s rainforest birds.
A total of 60 participants from the department staff, private organizations, higher education institutions and the public attended this program. Expert Lecture Series program is a platform for the Department to deliver and share information with the department staff, the public and relevant stakeholders. The next series of this program is scheduled for October this year and is open to all.
