THE FIRST EXPERT LECTURE SERIES PROGRAM 2017: SAVING ENDANGERED SPECIES
Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) Peninsular Malaysia organized the first Expert Lecture Series for this year on 31st March 2017 at the Auditorium, headquarters of PERHILITAN. The theme of the program, Saving Endangered Species, was chosen especially in conjunction with World Wildlife Day 2017 which falls on 3rd March annually.
Three (3) speakers were invited to present about the work they are doing on conservation of Sumatran rhinoceros and Asian elephant. Mr. Mohd Samsudin bin Mohd Suri, the Sumatran rhino expert talked about the factors that contribute towards the extinction of the Sumatran rhino and the way forward for survival of the species. The two other speakers presented findings of their studies on Asian elephants. They are part of the Management and Ecology of Malaysian Elephants (MEME), a project under the Nottingham University of Malaysia Campus. Dr. Wong Ee Phin shared on her research findings monitoring translocated wild elephants using hormones from their dung while Mr Lim Teck Wyn discussed the relations between humans and elephants in Peninsular Malaysia. Both of these speakers highlighted the importance of tolerance by the community that share the same habitat with wild elephants.
A total of 73 participants from the department staff, private organizations, higher education institutions and the public attended this program. Expert Lecture Series program is a platform for the Department to deliver and share information with the department staff, the public and relevant stakeholders. The next series of this program is scheduled for June and September this year and is open to all.
