Conference of Parties Ke 17 (CoP17) Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)
On 27 September to 5 October 2016, the Director General of the Department, Encik Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim together with the Secretary General of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE), Dato’ Sri Azizan bin Ahmad joined the Malaysian delegation to Johannesburg, South Africa for attended the 17th Conference of Parties (COP17) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
The conference was attended by 152 countries which are members of CITES to determine the appropriate trading rules for endangered species of wildlife and wild plants. Among the amendments accepted by a majority vote of members is upgrading all species of Lion (Panthera leo), Pangolin (Manis spp.) and the African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus) to Appendix I.
Malaysia's proposal to downgrade the Estuarine Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) to Appendix II (quota 0 for wild populations of Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah) and lists the Earless Monitor Lizard (Lanthanotidae) to Appendix II (quota 0 for wild populations) also received the agreement of all the member countries of CITES.
