Why the  increase in guide fee to climb Gunung Tahan?

The increase is effective since October 2007. This decision is made after the Department has carefully considered the issues concern in the interests of local community, natural resource and present situation.

  • This is the first time such increase is allowed since the activity(in this case climbing mount Tahan) is allowed in Taman Negara in the 80's.
  • Career as a mountain guide will not be considered anymore by local people due to the small income and it is insufficient to support their livelihood.
  • Mountain guide carries a very big responsibility and works 24hours a day along the expedition and their commitment should not be overlooked.
  • This increase was taken to encourage and support local community in terms of economy and to offer a good career opportunity for them. Ecotourism is not just about visiting nature, it requires taking responsibility of the natural resource and also being responsible to the local community while visiting the nature. Its not about us, its all about the sustainability of places we are going to.
  • The new pricing is still at reasonable cost compared to other National Parks of the world. It will only cost about RM100/person for a maximum group of 12person (max number of climber/guide) for  6 to 7 days climbing expedition.
  • The Mount Tahan Trail is limited to only a maximum of 48 climbers per day (on the trail). This is to minimize the impact  from user behaviour including soil damage, trampling effect, flora and fauna being damaged due to heavy usage of the trail. Increment in guide fee will help to make sure that only concern and responsible climbers will climb the mountain. These kind of climbers won’t care about their willingness to pay as long as the natural environment and resources is being given good attention and care. This indirectly involve their contribution to conservation.

Climbing Gunung Tahan ( additional information)

  • Is there any boat service to the foothill of the mountain : There is no boat service to the trailhead but you could choose to reach Kuala Tahan (Gunung Tahan trail starts here) either by boat or by road. The boat ride to Kuala Tahan starts from Kuala Tembeling Jetty near Jerantut town. Kuala Tahan is the main entrance to Taman Negara, and main entrance to climb Gunung Tahan. Another entrance to climb Mount Tahan is from Sungai Relau, Merapoh. Climbing from Sg Relau will take 3-4 days of trekking compared from Kuala Tahan.
  • Any campsites along the trail to Gunung Tahan? : There is designated campsites along the way to the peak and the camping fee is RM 1/ person/day. You’ll have to camp outdoor (tent) climbing the mountain. Do not forget that visitors entering the park will require a permit, which is issued upon arrival (RM1.00) and visitors with cameras will require a camera license (RM5.00 per camera) and fishing license is RM10.00 per rod.
  • Which one is the entrance to Mount tahan, Kuala Tembeling or Kuala Tahan? : The two main entrances to Mount Tahan is from Kuala Tahan and Sungai Relau, Merapoh. Kuala Tembeling is the jetty for the boat ride to Kuala Tahan. It is a different experience to choose either to reach the entrance by land or by boat.
  • How about water supply along the trail/expedition to the mountain?: Generally, water supply is not so much of a problem ,just bring your water bottle and container. There is time when dry season where water source for certain campsite will dry up . There will be water source along the trail and we do advice to bring along water supply at least for 1 day hike every day during your journey. You'll have to carry your own food supply or you can also hire a porter/guide to carry for you.
  • How about navigation/orienteering on the trail? The trail leads all the way to the top but you could not be so sure when it comes to nature. A lot of incident happens where climbers accidentally get lost because of misjudgment of the trail condition especially while trekking alone (left behind/separated from group). That is why it is a must for all climber to take mountain guide for climbing Mount Tahan.
  • How many days do I/we need to climb the mountain? :
    - Climb from Kuala Tahan - descend to Kuala Tahan : approximately 7D6N
    - Climb from Kuala Tahan - descend to Merapoh (or the other way round):approximately 7D6N
    - Climb from Merapoh - descend Merapoh : approximately 5D4N

*additional cost for 4WD transportation cost from/to Merapoh to/from Kuala Juram (Trailhead/ trail entrance to Gunung Tahan) - if entering/exits from Sungai Relau, Merapoh.
