REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL POLICIES

The Department is involved with coordination and implementation of regional and international policies on conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem. Some of the Multilateral Environmental Agreements that the DWNP is directly involved are:

1.
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
The Department implements decisions of this convention through protected areas managed by the Department. Such decisions , covers diverse issues such as creating national and regional protected area system, creating transborder protected areas with neighbouring countries, increasing regional cooperation in protected area management, controlling threats to protected areas such as alien species and encouraging benefit sharing among many parties as a result of protected area management.
2.
ASEAN Working Group on Nature Conservation and Biodiversity (AWGNCB)
This ASEAN Working Group focuses on increasing regional cooperation with regards to conservation of biodiversity.
3.
ASEAN Heritage Parks
Heritage Parks Programme brings closer cooperation among member countries in managing protected areas. This is achieved through information and expertise sharing among agencies that manage protected areas in their own countries. Nomination for enlistment of new protected areas in the ASEAN Heritage Parks list is very much encouraged.
4.
The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar)
The Convention on Wetlands, signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971, is an intergovernmental treaty which provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.

There are presently 155 Contracting Parties to the Convention, with 1675 wetland sites, totaling 150 million hectares, designated for inclusion in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance.

Malaysia ratified Ramsar Convention in 1994, designating Tasek Bera as its first Ramsar site. Characteristics of the freshwater lake meet the criterion of Ramsar Convention such as uniqueness of the lake, river, diversity in its flora and fauna and its function as a breeding location for waterbirds.

Other Ramsar sites in the country are as follows:
Sungai Pulai Mangroves, Johor (31/01/2003)
Tanjung Piai Mangroves, Johor (31/01/2003)
Kukup Island, Johor (31/01/2003)
Kuching Wetland National Park, Sarawak (08/11/2005)

Upon designation of Tasek Bera as Ramsar site for the country, the Department is entrusted with implementation of the Convention, which it also coordinates at the national level.
