The
Department of Wildlife and National Parks
is entrusted to enforce the Protection
of Wildlife Act 1972 [Act 76] to protect
wildlife species whether mature or immature
regardless whether it can be tamed or
bred in captivity. This does not include
marine species, fishes and domesticated
species such as cats, dogs and others.
Apart from protecting
wildlife species, the Department is
also entrusted to protect and manage
several forests which are gazetted as
national parks, reserves and wildlife
sanctuaries. This is to ensure the continued
existence of the nation's wildlife species.
Due
to high value and high demand from the
international market, wildlife has become
the main target by poachers with special
interest. Hence the Department has strengthened
its effort in enforcing the laws to
conserve the biodiversity resources
effectively. The enforcement of the
law is implemented at all level which
covers the headquarters, states and
districts. These tasks and responsibilities
are implemented through the following
programmes:
