WILDLIFE GENETIC RESOURCES BANK
(WGRB)
The Wildlife Genetic Resources Bank (WGRB) was established
at the end of 2006 and functions as a depository of
biological material including sperms, embryo, tissues,
blood (Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells and Serum)
and DNA of local wildlife species. The WGRB consists
of two closely related units which are the Cryogenic
Depository Centre and the Wildlife Molecular Genetic Unit.
To date, the genetic bank has deposited more than
600 of DNA material from 30 local wildlife species,
220 frozen sperms from two species and 20 serum samples
from four wildlife species. The DNA fingerprinting
of sixty samples from four local wild species have
been identified. At the moment, 40 to 60 genetic samples
has been collected monthly. All samples are very important
for scientific research and preserved as our biological
material references.
The Veterinary Officers, Research Officers and Wildlife
Officers of DWNP are responsible for the genetic banking,
and also collaborate with other conservation communities
including universities, zoos and government agencies.
The WGRB also coordinates programmes of biological
material sampling and processing, from various local
wildlife species.
